Planning a trip to Lake Como this year? You’ve come to the right place! In this article, I’ll share all the essential tips to make your getaway seamless. From how to get there to the best places to stay, things to do, and stylish outfit ideas, read on for everything you need!
How to Get There and Where to Stay

I had long dreamed of visiting Lake Como, and it was even more magical than I imagined.
We traveled at the end of July, flying with ITA Airways from Paris to Milan Linate (a quick two-hour flight). From there, we took a bus to Milano Centrale (20 min, €7 per person) and then a train to Como (40 min, €5 per person). It’s easy to check train schedules online and purchase tickets on-site.
Once in Como, we took a taxi to our hotel (around €15). We stayed at B&B Vista Lago for 4 days and 3 nights. Perched on a hill, it offers breathtaking lake views. However, the location is not central, so having a car or relying on taxis is necessary. Parking can be difficult and expensive, while taxis are often scarce, especially at night. We once waited over an hour to find one!
If you’d prefer something more convenient and luxurious, consider these options:
- Hilton Lake Como – Modern luxury with a rooftop pool and panoramic views.
- Grand Hotel Tremezzo – A glamorous lakeside escape with a floating pool and spa.
- Il Sereno – An ultra-chic five-star option with minimalist design and stunning lake views.
- Hotel Villa Cipressi – Located in Varenna, this historic villa offers lush gardens and elegant charm.
Budget-Friendly Hotels:
- Hotel Tre Re (Como) – A charming, centrally located hotel offering comfortable rooms with easy access to the lake.
- Hotel Villa Aurora (Lezzeno) – Lakeside accommodation with stunning views, perfect for relaxing without breaking the bank.
- Hotel Du Lac (Varenna) – A mid-range hotel with lakeside dining, ideal for enjoying the views without the luxury price tag.
- Albergo Milano (Varenna) – Affordable with cozy rooms and a terrace overlooking the lake.
Day 1: Exploring Como

We arrived in the afternoon, took some time to relax, and then headed out to explore Como’s charming city center on foot. Strolling through the picturesque streets, we admired the historical architecture and lively piazzas before heading to the lakefront.
Next, we took the Como-Brunate Funicular for spectacular panoramic views. Although there’s not much to do at the top apart from enjoying the scenery, it’s worth it for the breathtaking sunset views.
Feeling hungry, we tried Bellavista, a restaurant up the hill with incredible views. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming and overpriced. Next time, I’d stay in the city center for dinner.
We later opted for a second dinner at Doppio Malto, a casual spot where I had a delicious burger and discovered my newfound love for lemon soda. Highly recommend it!
Outfit: For this relaxed day, I wore a red off-the-shoulder broderie midi dress paired with comfy sandals, perfect for matching the sunset hues.

Day 2: Bellagio & Varenna

On our second day, we wanted to visit the nearby towns of Bellagio and Varenna. Lake Como’s ferries are the best option, but during the summer season, tickets sell out fast. We learned the hard way — by arriving at the port at 9:30 am, we faced long lines and missed the fast ferry. Instead, we settled for the slower ferry (2 hours to Bellagio).
Tip: Buy your ferry tickets in advance or arrive at the port by 8 am for the best chance of getting on a fast ferry.
While waiting, we visited Villa Olmo. It’s free to enter and offers a glimpse of grandeur with its beautiful architecture and gardens overlooking the lake.

Bellagio
Bellagio was charming but incredibly crowded. After a leisurely lunch at Ristorante La Punta (that was actually good), we explored the cobblestone streets, shopped at small boutiques, and enjoyed gelato.

Varenna
Varenna, however, was serene and far less crowded. We visited the enchanting Villa Cipressi Garden (€10 per person) and took in the views from the iconic lakeside arches. It’s a must-visit, and if you’re lucky, you might catch a wedding there!

Tip: Get in line at least an hour before ferry departures to secure a seat.
Outfit: I wore a cream off-the-shoulder maxi dress for a romantic, princess-inspired look that perfectly complemented the villas. I paired it with sandals for comfort.
Day 3: Lenno & Tremezzo

For a change of pace, we opted for the bus. However, Google Maps misguided us, and we ended up paying €50 for a taxi to a remote bus stop. Lesson learned: always ask locals for directions! Buses are often late, so don’t worry if one doesn’t show up right away — it’s common to wait around 30 minutes for the next one.
Lenno
We visited Villa Balbianello (€23 per person for a guided tour). The villa, famous for its appearance in movies like Star Wars and James Bond, was magical. The gardens were straight out of a fairytale.

Tremezzo
Next, we explored Villa Carlotta (€15 per person). The gardens alone are vast and impressive, featuring a variety of themed landscapes. The villa also houses a captivating art museum.

After a late lunch, we returned to Como. Traffic made the trip longer, but the day’s experiences were worth it.
Outfit: A breezy floral dress with platform sandals, matching the vibrant gardens beautifully.
Where to Eat and Drink
- Ristorante Sociale (Como) – Authentic Italian cuisine in a charming, traditional setting.
- La Vita è Bella (Como) – Known for fresh salads and light dishes, perfect for a midday meal.
- Locanda La Tirlindana (Sala Comacina) – Lakeside dining with delicious pasta and seafood.
- Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi – A luxurious fine dining experience.
Budget-Friendly Restaurants:
- Osteria del Gallo (Como) – Authentic Italian cuisine at reasonable prices, offering homemade pasta and local dishes.
- Pizzeria La Lampara (Bellagio) – Delicious wood-fired pizzas with a laid-back atmosphere.
- Il Cavatappi (Varenna) – Small, intimate restaurant with affordable pasta dishes and great wine options.
- Trattoria del Porto (Lenno) – Lakeside trattoria with traditional Italian dishes and budget-friendly prices.
- Gelateria Lariana (Como) – Perfect for a sweet treat, offering authentic gelato with plenty of flavors.
Day 4: Final Thoughts

The next day, it was time to go back. We woke up, had breakfast at the hotel and called a taxi to the train station.
Lake Como is an enchanting destination, from its serene waters to the historical villas and lush gardens. However, I would recommend visiting during the off-season (spring or early fall) to avoid the heavy crowds.
Comfortable shoes are a must, as you’ll be walking a lot. Also, wear breathable fabrics, stylish but practical outfits, and don’t forget your sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and SPF for sun protection. Even better, bring a chic umbrella for both shade and unexpected showers.
Next time, I’d plan my days in advance, wake up earlier, and aim for a slower, more relaxed pace. Despite the small challenges, my trip was unforgettable, and I can’t wait to return!
I hope these tips help you make the most of your own Lake Como adventure. Happy travels!
